How much luggage is allowed on the trains?
On most trains you are limited by what you can easily carry and board. Luggage is transported in trains on a self-service basis. We recommend that you travel light!
Usually there are no weight limitations on baggage, except on high-speed trains or some of the special hotel trains. On the Eurostar, Thalys and TGV, each passenger may take along 2 large pieces of luggage and a single piece of hand luggage.
Most trains have an overhead storage rack along with luggage areas at the end of the car. Baggage is the sole responsibility of the traveler as the railroads will assume no responsibility in case of loss or theft. We advise that you always keep an eye on your luggage in the trains and on the platforms. In night trains it is normally possible to lock your cabin.
Many train stations have luggage lockers (example in Austria) and /or a left luggage facility. Bigger stations have luggage carts / trolleys on the platforms, for which you sometimes have to pay a small deposit.
